Taking control of your life #1

Many times we feel that our life is out of control. We feel that many things happen without we realizing/wanting them. It feels like someone else is controlling our life and many times we ask ourselves why did we do something in the first place. This makes you think that you are just going with the flow and not living your life with any purpose. You feel like you are living your life in a mechanical way and at times this leads to demotivation and complacency.

Someone said progress is happiness. You need to progress in life in order to be happy. You can not be stagnant and be used a certain way and continue the same way if you want to be happy. No matter how awesome your life is, you will feel bored if you do not progress and continue the same way. You can make progress in two ways. One where you want to go and the one where life takes you. In my opinion, progress that you control gives more happiness than progress that just happens. For example, you are in your mid 30s and you are well settled in your job. Since you already have 10-15 years of experience you know how to deal with your job. You continue to perform at average to above average level without having to think about it. You will get that usual promotion and hike every other year without you realizing it and sometimes you take it for granted. In this scenario you are making progress but without any conscious effort. Whereas let's say you want to get that promotion, you have that in your mind and you getup and attend your work thinking about it, it might still take same amount of time, but you will feel it once you achieve it. You will be motivated to do the same work, you will have some passion attached to it, as a byproduct you might perform like a superstar and might achieve it sooner.
